When I was young

my father told me,

“Seek wisdom, get an education,

and make something of your life.”

But I refused to listen,

instead I went my own way.

Years later

when I finally heard what he said,

I followed his advice,

and found that he’d tried to steer me

away from many mistakes

false starts and dark paths

I made and toward a goal,

that ultimately

led me to

live a life

that satisfies me.
