One thing

I never expected,

as I matured

into a seasoned citizen

is how cute,

kids would become to me.

When I was younger,

I appreciated the children,

God allowed me to help raise.

I appreciated,

my nieces and nephews.

But other children

were just there.

I didn’t pay,

much attention to them.

I was almost the embodiment,

of that famous old quote

From W. C. Fields,

“Get away boy, you bother me.”

Now

as a member

of the receding generation

I find children a blessing,

just to watch,

their innocence

is a source,

of constant wonder

and astonishment to me.

Something

precious to behold,

and

sacred to protect.
