Flowers in a Field November 5, 2025

Remember,
summer seemed forever,
when we were ten years old?
That’s how youth felt,
while we swaggered
our way through it,
knowing it would last forever,
giving no thought
to the forever fleeting experience
of being:
young,
fit,
healthy,
and strong
Middle age creeps up on us
silently
as we’re too preoccupied
with work to notice.
By the time we acknowledge middle age
we tip over into being old.
Old age endures until it doesn’t.
Each new decade
brings fresh revelations,
of our mortality
until that frail mortality
is irrevocably proven,
and we step off the stage,
to the cheers,
the moans,
or the indifference
of the world
swirling around
our brief excursion
as a flower in the field.
